MARIA: The Sandugo

I am back to write anything again…

What am I supposed to write the moment I typed here in front of the computer to share;

I have the picture of the popular minority who lives in the island of my province.  She is Maria.  I asked her permission to take picture and post it here.

Maria is a friend to consider, a valued person to be with no matter who she is.  We usually call them Mangyan or Sandugo.

We exchanged the individual beliefs, opinions and how the majority treat them.  I know she is offended once they call her Mangyan.

As human being who also the heart to bear the pain…the deepest and intense pain.  Every time we talk, I see to it that I could make her smile.  I don’t want her to remember the times she was hurt.

Everyone deserves to be treated fair and just.  Simplicity is the real beauty.  Black is beautiful.

She is the real Mindoreña from her tribe.  During Japanese time, there were many exiled Filipinos who came in the island but the first Mindoreño is no other than Mangyans or Sandugo.

If there is an occasion, they usually do the house to house to ask food or anything.  I remember when I made a poem referring to the minority for wanting to defend them that they have the right to do what others can and not the feeling of being discriminated.  We tend to judge people or judge them for acting and wearing differently.

Let me share the POEM dated August 26, 1999

Sandugo

Mangyan man sila o sandugo

Mananatiling tawag sa kanila’y tao pa rin;

Hindi sila dapat laitin,

Bagkus ay dapat pa ngang purihin.

Sila ay tunay na mga tao

Sila ay hindi dapat layuan;

Sila ay handang makiagapay,

Lalo na sa taong nangangailangan.

Huwag silang tatawanan

Lalong higit ay ang iiwasan;

Dahil sila ay dapat na hangaan,

At huwag ang pagmalupitan.

Huwag silang gagalitin

Ni pintasan o karumihan;

Dahil baka mapasunod,

Sa kanilang patutunguhan.

Hindi sila iba

At mas lalong hindi aba;

Dahil sila ay may angking kasipagan,

At may paninindigan pa.

Huwag lakas loob na manloloko

Dahil kapwa natin sila tao;

Na may damdaming nasasaktan,

At ang mas lalong panghihinayang.

Sila ay ituring na kaibigan

At hindi kaaway o kalaban man;

Dahil sila ay likas na mabuti,

At may taglay na mababang kalooban.

Mukha mang nanglilimahid

At nagtataglay pa rin ng kalinisan;

Kung imumulat lang ang mga mata,

Sa pawang katotohanan lamang.

Panlabas na kaanyuan

Ay hindi naman tunay na mahalaga;

Dahil ang laman ng puso’t isipan,

Ang siyang dapat na makita.

Mga minoridad  nga kung tawagin

Pero may angking talino rin;

Kailangan nga lamang pang linangin,

Upang lalo pang pagyamanin.

Writing is apparently my passion.  I used to write anything particularly if I have to meditate the subject like this…the minority in my place whom the first Mindoreño who lives before the Japanese and other races conquered.
